In the opening episodes of the epic Sci-Fi show “The Expanse” (link) the audience learns of an ambitious plan by the Mormon Church. The Church has constructed a massive generational spaceship in the hopes of leaving the solar system, with the goal of leaving fractious Earth, Mars, and the Astroid belt to fight amongst themselves - Mormanity looking to colonize deep space.
In the backstory we learn that the project was met with skepticism and resistance from other factions, who see the Mormons’ departure as a threat to their own interests. And <spoiler alert> by the end of episode 4 of season 1 of this six season show, the Mormon’s generational galactic moon shot has been repurposed for more parochial solar system focused responsibilities.
Like an interstellar crab hoping to claw its way out of the gravity-well bucket of the Sun, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints reached for the stars only to be clawed back by the soon-to-be-waring factions of the Sun God Ra, bedecked in all their radiance with five and half more seasons of science fiction gold.
